Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park – Tanzania’s Hidden Wilderness Gem

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s second-largest national park and one of the country’s most spectacular yet least-visited wildlife destinations. Located in the remote southern circuit, Ruaha offers an authentic, untouched safari experience surrounded by dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich biodiversity. The park is especially renowned for its impressive elephant population and the rare combination of both greater and lesser kudu—making it a truly unique destination for nature lovers.

About the Park

Covering an impressive 20,226 km², Ruaha lies approximately 130 km west of Iringa. Its landscapes range from vast open plains and rugged rocky hills to dense woodlands dotted with iconic baobab trees. The lifeline of the park is the Great Ruaha River, a permanent water source that attracts wildlife throughout the year and creates exceptional game-viewing opportunities.

Wildlife Experience

Ruaha is home to one of the largest elephant concentrations in East Africa. The park also supports thriving populations of:

  • Lions, leopards, hyenas, and other predators
  • Buffalo, zebra, giraffes, and numerous antelope species
  • Both greater and lesser kudu, sable, and roan antelopes—an extremely rare combination not commonly found elsewhere in Tanzania

With its rich blend of habitats, Ruaha offers an extraordinary and diverse wildlife experience for both seasoned travelers and first-time safari guests.
